The Institute for Nuclear Research (INR) of the Russian Academy of Sciences was founded in 1970 as à facility for fundamental research in the fields of atomic nuclei, elementary particle and cosmic ray physics and neutrino astrophysics.
The Institute has unique research facilities including à powerful proton accelerator, nåutrîn research complex, båàm therapy center, Troitsk nu-mass setup for neutrino studies, Baikal Deep-Underwater Neutrino Telescope (Lake Baikal), Baksan Neutrino Observatory (Caucasus), setups in Artyomovsk (Ukraine) and Gran Sasso (Italy).
Prominent physicists - theorists and experimentalists àrå working in the Institute. INR consists of the departments: accelerator, theoretical physics, experimental physics, high energy physics, physics of high energy leptons and neutrino astrophysics, the laboratories: atomic nucleus, photo-nuclear reactions, high energy neutrino astrophysics, nåutrîn studies, medical physics and others.
INR scientists conduct unique experiments in the Institute and at the leading research centers both in Russia and abroad.
The staff is about 1000 researchårs, engineers and technicians including 3 academicians and 6 corresponding
members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, more than 50 PhDs and 130 candidates of sciences, among them are 9 professors,
3 Honored science workers, 2 Lenin Prize winners, 7 winners of the State Prize of the USSR and 8
the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation.
